What is the difference between a UNION carpentry job and a private carpentry job?

I just landed a job as an apprentice carpenter for a Union company. It pays good and I have no experience so I will be learning.

Is there some sort of catch? Is it better to have a private job or to belong to the union?

Im a little nervous. No experience. No tools. Any advice and general info that you would like to give would be highly appreciated!

Bayt.com is a Scam. There are not jobs on this website, only a lengthy form that leads you to pay for their CV building services. That’s all you will be getting from them. Bayt.com and Rabea Ataya is a Fraud. There are many articles on this individual and no one knows why the Dubai police is not doing anything about this fraudster. We demand Rabea Ataya by taken to jail for the crimes of stealing money from Jordanians and innocent Saudi residents.

Working under a union has its benefits and disadvantages. Benefits are that you have someone else to go to bat for you if you have some sort of problems or issues with your employer, your union goes to your employer and negotiates your wages, raises and benefits for you, your union protects your job from being taken away by other-non union members. Union shops will stand behind you and protect you in cases where your employer is trying to make you do a dangerous job or work with dangerous/faulty equipment. With a union in back of you they will stand up for your rights, without a union you are on your own. Im willing to bet the union will supply your tools and maybe even pay for tuition in any kind of classes you might need to take, but im not certain.

Bad things about working for a union is many times you might have a co-worker who has been with the company for several years, has seniority built up and frankly just sits on his/her ass, doing as little as possible. They have the union to protect them, thus here you are at the company busting your butt making X amount of dollars per hour, this guy next to you is doing as little as possible and making the exact same amount of money. Since you and your co-workers pay rate is set under the same contract there is no sort of incentive for you to work harder, you wont get a raise unless all of your co-workers get a raise as well no matter how hard you work. Promotions as well, promotions in a union shop are regulated due to seniority and not due to experience or how hard you work. You could be there everyday on time, then Joe Smith who shows up late 2-3 times a week gets the promotion simply because he has a few more weeks seniority than you do.

Personally if i were you i would go for it. The good outweighs the bad. Get you some experience, work through their apprenticeship program for a few years. Then 3-4 years from now when you become a journeyman you can "move out on your own". In other words continue to work for a union or go with a non-union carpentry job.
