Dot Perta on NPR

Retired Local 210 Carpenter Dot Perta was interviewed in anticipation of an event in Connecticut called "Thirty Years and Still Building: Connecticut's Groundbreaking Women Celebrate Their lives in the Trades."The event is being organized by the Connecticut State Building Trades and the Permanent Commission of the Status of Women. It will recognize the first generation of women to work full careers in the building trades and who have retired or are about to retire.

The event will feature the debut of "Women in the Trades." In the film, eighteen Connecticut women share their stories about entering the trades during the late 1970s/early 1980s. These women came into the trades at a time when their participation challenged industry norms and required major adjustments on the part of most participants.

Among the honorees will be carpenters electricians, laborers, pipefitters, teamsters, and a number of other trades. The event is being held Saturday, May 16 at Zandri's Stillwood Inn in Wallingford, CT.

Governor Deval Patrick at the Millbury Carpenters Training Facility

On March 24th, 2010, Governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick visited and toured the Carpenters Training Facility in Millbury, MA. After touring the various ongoing classes in floorcovering, woodwork, and metal stud, the Governor also got to see the Pile Drivers' dive tank in action, with a diving and underwater welding demonstration provided by one of Local 56's own. The Governor was impressed with the apprentices and the multitude of skills that are taught and/or sharpened at the Millbury facility everyday.

Union Carpenters Keep Watch on GlobalFoundries

GlobalFoundries announced today it has officially purchased 223 acres at Luther Forest Technology Campus, and work is scheduled to begin on the site Monday. Here's a timeline on how the project got to this point. 1999 North Greenbush community rejects plans to build computer chip plant, prompting Saratoga Economic Development officials to begin negotiations to bring the project to Saratoga County 2002 Saratoga Economic Development Corp. files zoning application for chip plant 2004 Towns of Malta and Stillwater approve zoning application for computer chip manufacturing plant 2006 Advanced Micro Devices of Sunnyvale, Calif. announces plan to build $3.2 billion chip plant in Malta. New York State approves $1.2 billion incentive package December 200 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers grants permits authorizing Luther Forest Tech Campus to build roads and install sewer lines at 1,350-acre campus February 2008 AMD files construction plans to build in Malta April 2008 Construction bids awarded for $33 million, 5.5 miles of interior roads in the Luther Forest Technology Campus. Rifenburg Construction of Brunswick in Rensselaer County wins contract October 2008 AMD commits to building an 890,000-square-foot chip plant at the Luther Forest Technology Campus which straddles Malta and Stillwater in Saratoga County. Construction cost increased to at least $4.2 billion from $3.2 billion December 2008 Moodys Investors Service downgrades AMD corporate rating, giving the company a negative outlook after AMD announced that fourth quarter results would be weaker than anticipated January 2009 Federal government approves AMD spinoff—The Foundry Co. that later would be renamed GlobalFoundries—a joint venture of AMD and Advanced Technology Investment Co., a company owned by the Abu Dhabi government February 2009 AMD shareholders (NYSE: AMD) approve $8 billion investment in the chip plant by Advanced Technology Investment Co. March 2009 AMD announces that GlobalFoundries Inc. will be the name of the new manufacturing spinoff to run chip fabrication plant June 2009 GlobalFoundries buys 223 acres from Luther Forest Technology Campus Economic Development Corp. Site clearing work set to begin this month. 2014 GlobalFoundries expects to be at full operation, employing 1,465 workers AMD loses $330M more Stock declines as second quarter report reflects drop in sales MALTA -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc., the only customer of GlobalFoundries Inc., reported a loss of $330 million for the second quarter. The company lost $1.2 billion in the year-earlier quarter. The announcement comes just days before GlobalFoundries will break ground on a $4.2 billion computer chip factory in Saratoga County. AMD, which spun off its manufacturing operations earlier this year to create GlobalFoundries, also reported sales of $1.18 billion, down 13 percent from the same period in 2008. Analysts had been expecting a larger decline amid the global recession that has hit the semiconductor industry particularly hard, so in some ways the news was positive for AMD. GlobalFoundries is a joint venture between AMD and the Advanced Technology Investment Co., an investment fund owned by Abu Dhabi, an oil-rich emirate. The company, which like AMD is headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., is holding a groundbreaking ceremony Friday morning for the factory, known as Fab 2. Three hundred business and political leaders are expected to attend the invitation-only event at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Malta, including Hector Ruiz, the former chief executive officer of AMD who initially negotiated the company's move to New York with Gov. George Pataki three years ago. Ruiz is now chairman of GlobalFoundries. AMD's financial results are important to GlobalFoundries because for the time being, GlobalFoundries is only making AMD-designed chips at AMD's former manufacturing operations in Dresden, Germany. In order to justify the need for the Malta fab, GlobalFoundries will likely need to attract new customers, something the company says is imminent. "We're getting a lot of interest from potential customers," said GlobalFoundries spokesman Travis Bullard. "We expect to announce a new customer very soon and hope to have additional customer announcements by the end of the year." GlobalFoundries has been clearing a 100-acre site at Luther Forest for Fab 2. It is expected to take about two years to complete the $800 million building shell, for which New York state is providing $650 million in cash. The factory is expected to become fully operational by 2012 when it will be processing between 25,000 and 35,000 silicon wafers per month containing advanced computer chips.
